Definition

Proper noun: - Trần Khắc Chân (1370 - 1399): A renowned military commander of the Trần dynasty during the reign of Emperor Trần Nghệ Tông. He was a descendant of Bảo Nghĩa vương Trần Bình Trọng and hailed from Lăng village, Vĩnh Ninh district (now Vĩnh Lộc district, Thanh Hóa province). He is celebrated for his military prowess and loyalty to the Trần dynasty.

Historical Significance and Usage
  • Military Achievement: In 1389, when the Champa kingdom invaded Thanh Hóa, the general Hồ Quý Li failed to repel them. Trần Khắc Chân was appointed by the Retired Emperor Nghệ Tông to lead the counterattack. His forces fought valiantly, killed the Champa king Chế Bồng Nga, and drove out the Champa army. For this victory, he was bestowed the title "Nội vệ Thượng tướng quân" (Senior General of the Inner Guard), also known as Tiết Quan Nội Hầu, and granted a fief in the Kẻ area south of Thăng Long capital.
  • Conspiracy and Death: In 1399, after Hồ Quý Li murdered Emperor Trần Thuận Tông and plotted to usurp the Trần throne, Trần Khắc Chân secretly conspired with other nobles and warriors to assassinate Hồ Quý Li during a sworn ceremony at Đốn Sơn (Cao Một village, Vĩnh Lộc). The plot was exposed. He and his group of 370 co-conspirators were executed. Legend states that before his beheading, he shouted three anguished cries that echoed across Đốn Sơn mountain. He died at the age of 29.
  • Legacy and Worship: He is widely venerated as a symbol of loyalty and righteousness. Many literary works from later eras praise his noble character. People built temples in his honor in Phương Nhai village and on the slopes of Đốn Sơn mountain. Twenty-nine villages across three districts (Cao Mật, Bỉnh Bút, Nam Cai) worship him. In Thăng Long, residents of the Kẻ area also erected a temple, carved statues, and commemorated his virtues.
